Report lays out JPL’s resilience strategies for facing environmental extremes
Environmental extremes and other risks present critical challenges to the resilience of JPL and its surrounding areas, impacting infrastructure, operations, and the well-being of the workforce. This report provides JPL's first comprehensive assessment of local environmental hazards and Laboratory resilience, highlighting the complexity and urgency of these challenges. While climate varibilitity is influencing long-term trends in temperature, precipitation, and extreme events, JPL/NASA must also contend with a broad range of immediate environmental risks, including heat waves, poor air quality, severe storms, and wildfires. These risks can strain vulnerabilities in Laboratory infrastructure. The report lays out thoughtful and relevant ways that JPL can prepare and adapt so that the work of the Lab and the safety of the workforce continues unimpeded.
The report's primary goal is to characterize JPL's vulnerabilities to environmental changes and extremes while supporting adaptation and resilience planning. By integrating state-of-the-art Earth observations with actionable insights, this report provides a framework for addressing these challenges and serves as a potential model for other NASA centers.
